How can I determine if the P trap is functioning as it should?

Any simple test I can perform that would let me know? I Just moved into a place temporarily and this is what I discovered when I looked under the sink.

The reason I ask is because I suspect roaches are coming up the pipe and out through the drain or that gap because the trap is not adequate due to the pipe either being too big or not at the right angle...or any other reason.

The gap I've already sealed, but now I am worried the roaches are just going to come in through the sink drain. The pipe isn't connected to the sewers but rather pokes out of the wall where the water falls into a river at the other side of that wall. Not staying long so not willing to shell out more than a night out's worth for this endeavor.

Appreciate any advice I can get!

It’s called upvc. It’s similar to regular white pvc but the way it’s made is different. It’s got a much thinner wall and is a pain in the ass to cut with a sawzall, starts shattering easily. You can get solvent joints or they’ve also got the fittings with gaskets in them so you can just slip the pipe in the fitting. I’ve only ever see it outside of the US.
