That serial number just gives me an idea of how old it is. If it shows warranty then I would ask the customer if it was ever replaced and then I call the supply house
to verifiy if it is still under warranty or not. If it shows out of warranty on the tank then I tell them they need to buy a new tank or put money into an old tank.

Do you have a better pic of the water heater ? Maybe one showing the install conditions and the control ?

Have you checked that the water heater is in warranty ? The date doesn’t matter unless its over 6 yrs old. The existing heater may be a warrranty replacement and only had the remainder of the original heaters warranty.

I’d type the serial number into Rheems system and check.

I certainly don’t go by what the customer says. They’re wrong more than they are right unless they have a receipt in hand.

So I got this guy up and running and made a few coins in the process.
This is the old defective gas control.

By the way Terrance, if you look at the gas cock in your photo, it is the old illegal type. They tend to leak. But you probably already know that.
There’s nothing in our code that says it has to be replaced.

Those Rheem heaters with that control didn’t come from a box store.

Maximum support per table 415.1 in the Fuel Gas Code book for 1/2" nominal tubing is 4'.

You are correct Terrance. It is not properly secured.
I’ll let you slide this time because I believe you’re one of the better plumbers on the forum. This high valve business has to stop 🤣

Oh do you think that I did the original installation? No sir. I only replaced the gas control.

A local large contractor did all the homes in that development. But the home-owners go to their local phone directory and find Tommy Plumber even though the big plumbing company who installed them has his sticker on the tank....LOL

You left it like that so you own it now.
