I just renewed my ads at a discount of 50% under last year's price.

Now, one full page color (Yellowbook--big here) is costing me 400.00/month and the other full page color (Verizon) is now 150.00/month. The third book (Dex) wouldn't come down got reduced to a in-column ad. The fourth book, I didn't go into at all except for the free listing

I told the salesmen that I wanted to reduce the ad to a in-column ad from a full page color and they all freaked out. I had to sit through a 3 hour meeting with a salesrep and his manager, while I repeated the mantra: "Ads are too expensive...Ads are too expensive". They relented and lowered the price.

The thing is, I would have gone to in-column for the next few years until the economy sorts itself out.

The other thing is prices will never go back up now. No way will I ever pay those high prices again!

I currently don't have a single ad in a phone book but the Dex guy has been calling. I have no idea what they cost in a little tiny Dex book like the one we have. Years ago I had all the big ads but that was when I was in Ca. I hated paying those bills.
We have a small paper called the shopper that comes out once a week. Everyone reads it here, have a 4x5 ad, that's all I run. About 120 a month I think.

Whatever price he tells you, deduct 70% and stick to it. High price ads right now are worthless. Yellow pages are 50% less effective as they were even 2 years ago.

I'm even debating about dropping the 150./mth Verizon ad until next year.

Thanks Plumber I'll do that. I remember years ago when I sat down with those crooks, they were tough but you could always break em down after a while. I would only put in a dollar bill size ad, maybe. Nobody here has full or even half page ads.

Time to play hard ball!

Tell them that your web site generates more jobs than they do,
Tell them that you brought all the yellow page books home and attempted to use each one of them and you decided that only one book was convenient and it wasn't theirs so you figured other users would feel the same and you decided not to have an ad with them...

Watch them play lets make a deal!

Idearc is bankrupt. They filed Chapter 11 a few weeks ago. Last year's book was crap here, as they're #3 in a small area.

I'm real hesitant to spend any money with a failed company.

well, i should be in the new book in june and got what i thought was a good deal. i can't remember what she called the ad size, half double column? basically it's 2/3 of a 1/2 page ad. i got 2 of them and an online ad for $106/month. they threw in a free month too. it seemed like a decent price to me.

we have three different phone books in our area-i told each rep as they called me to give me a bid price just like all my customers expect and to guarantee the results- hhaha-no one has called back yet from any of the yellow pages-hope i didnt shoot myself in the foot. but most of my customers are repeat customers and look on the fridge for my number-no sense sending them back to the yellow pages to see my competition-almost every call we get that is generated from yellow pages is a price shopper-what about you guys?

I land calls all the time from yellow pages. Yes, I get price shoppers as well, and the customer isn't as loyal to the cause, that's for sure.

Well today I changed all of that; I dropped all my advertising with the Yellow Pages. Some resistance, but it's not anything I'll commit to at this point.

They are telling me the service industry took a pounding this year. So, here's my thinking on the matter:

This new yellow pages book is going to be "less" advertising because there's no way in hell the economy is just affecting a few plumbers. It's affecting them all and running bigger ads is not the answer at this point, unless the price is right.

I've been in business 7 years and as many legs of advertising I have going, it's time to test the waters and see if my income drops with this move.

This move will free up $500/month that I could put into direct advertising on my own with fridge magnets, target my work areas, and hitting a income median range that usually belts the best type of customer.

I'm hoping to get away from this model once and for all. My $6000/year has to be felt, because I know there are others in my same boat that's going to do it.

Bottom line; I had every intentions to do this someday, I'm just doing it sooner than later.

In the past couple months, I've figured out how to trim $1200/month in excess spending out of my operating expenses. This in turn has made me a more efficient businessman that took the economical climate, even though business has been really good since 2 weeks before christmas. What I need is operating capital for my other companies that I won't borrow at this point. Not going to happen.

The truth about lending is the only time banks lend money...is when you really don't need it. If you need it....count yourself out for getting a loan.

Paying off credit cards right now are top priority as well. I'm operating my business in respect that harder times are coming, to which I believe is true. The less I owe others, the more freedoms I have in the monthly operations in costs.

When things pick up and I keep this attitude, my ability to work off of my own money increases, allowing me better financial decision making. To be completely removed from this predatory lending would be fantastic right now.

65% of our calls...website
30%...................repeat cust
5% ....................YP

I've never had an ad larger than dollar bill size. Cost for a full page ad (greater Dallas county) $30,000.00 plus at least 2K for pro ad designer.

YP's make me sick.

I canceled Idearc/Verizon. They went Chapter 11 and I can't see them doing anything of quality this year. Knowing them, they will cut corners in disto and size. Yikes....

That leaves me in the 2 major books of the 4 books in this small area. I get a response from the internet and I got other ads going.

Interesting times.

you dont live in tallahassee, so why would you want to increase traffic from tallahassee? Your question isn't serious is it? The spiders from google and yahoo would love to see how many pages on the web you have linking back to your site. Just tryin to help you out man. I know we have our spats, but, I hate to hear that work is getting slow for anyone.

Nah, Google and the rest know where I am. Thanks for your concerns, though.
