I recently passed the MA master plumbing license exam and the company that I work for is looking to work out a deal where they use my license to run the business. The owner of the company is not a licensed plumber. I was wanting to know if any of you have a similar situation and what it’s worth $$?

I disagree. It’s definitely worth something. The guy who holds the license for the company now is getting old and ready to walk away. The company will not be able to operate without a master plumber

We'd love to have you steve but you've got to post a thorough intro first.

Thanks for posting an intro.

I'd say it's worth a controlling stake in the company. I'd also pack away that extra money you start getting while you're still used to the lower pay. This way if the ship sinks you can start your own business and rise like a pheonix from the ashes!!!

It's worth something, that's for sure. You should have them by the balls with your master's license. Btw, congrats on joining the ranks of master plumbers.

That's a very strange concept for me, you supply the Master license and they still own you and keep you in the dark. What does that tell you? Feels like you are still a a pawn and a tool for their profit. They don't tell you how much he earned well that right there shows a lack of transparency. What happens if they owe money some day, since you are in the gimmick you are just as accountable?

Here if individuals in a group of people who hold only a portion of all the ministry's licenses and one of them leaves then they have 60 days to find someone with that license otherwise the whole business has to shut down and is not allowed to contract and work in any way shape or form. Let's say one of the guy leaves the business with one of the licenses without telling you and you are working on a project and you need to shut down because all of a sudden you are working illegally you are still obliged to finish contracts and probably liable with late fees.

Nope not for me. First rule I learned from old timers on PZ NEVER WORK FOR A GC!

My father who was in his 90s sold his masters liscense to some new upstart company
for about 350 a month.... I did not think it would last long because the guy running the place
seemed to be a loon to me , who did not know what he was doing.... but he acted like
he knew.....

My dad got 350 a month for about 3-4 years out of them before he died at 95 and
and it turned out the guy was a total loon because I heard he sold the business to another
sucker and then went and married his boyfreind..... LOL:ROFLMAO::LOL::LOL::sneaky:

they had to make him an employee of the company for insurance purposes
and I figured if they really messed up it was not
going to be a great loss if he lost his card...

what you get out of them is negotiable

That's what I'm thinking. $400-$500 a month usage fee and liability disclaimers. Something like your license is for paperwork only.

Legally it can't only be for paperwork. Legally if you hold the only master license in that company you're responsible when SHTF.

If an apprentice is caught alone on the job none of the journeymen will be at fault, the guy at the top with the master license will be at fault because from a licensing standpoint he was his master.

If you want to provide the master license for this company that's fine, but understand that means you need to be running the company or at least be making sure all of the work is done properly and that no one is doing work who shouldn't be. Mastermark's dad was in his 90's and thus didn't need to worry about the legal ramifications, he'd be dead before the case even went to court! lolz

I had a similar arrangement with a company so I can tell you first hand whatever you agree to get it in writing, if it is not in writing then it didn't happen. Due to the continued lies and "smoke blowing" I finally left that company and started my own.
I do not know the laws there but here when the business was operating under my license I was legally responsible for the actions of everyone working for the company.
I would tell them to double your current salary and for every permit pulled under your license you receive an additional 10% of the total project. You may work for a rare company that will take care of you but most will only use you up and spit you out.

in my area its illegal for a master plumber to cover other people under the license..UNLESS..you are the employing master plumber and whoever does plumbing work in the company is YOUR employee..and YOU are responsible for everything they do....so whats that worth for your aggravation and liability exposure..

The laws are a little different everywhere, you need to be certain of the laws in MA, here I do not have to be their employer but I am required to be in a position of authority over them ( Foreman, Supervisor, etc,) and have to be a full time employee of the company operating under my license.
