Today most companies seem to be cutting back on phone books and going more with web sites. I still get way more calls on phone books than on my web site. Probably because I'm in a rural area with older people who still think the computer is the work of the devil.
How have you guys been doing in more populated area's and with younger people to service?

That's the billion dollar question.

I've got major yellow ads that aren't pulling worth a damn. Little ads get lost up here, so its it either large or nothing.

But the internet isn't making me enough to survive on and my other campaigns are branding only.

If you cut back on your normal ads, people will think you died or losing the business.

I have yet to set up a web site simply because I don't know how :cry:and to have someone do it for me is way too expensive. I have not had much luck with the yellow pages either. Most of my work comes from word of mouth and newspaper ads. I am currently trying to find a cheap artist to draw up a logo for me. I pretty much know what i want I just need someone to draw it.

Many website people are self-employed and will trade for services. I paid a thousand for mine and that was the last time I spent money on it. I pay 5 years in advance for server space (100.00).

As for the younger customers up here, they don't get potty-trained until they're 35, so it isn't a factor.

Speaking of internet, has anyone noticed that search engines are having a difficult time pulling up relevant sites with all the link farms out there. When the average consumer doesn't find what they need in a few clicks, I bet they will go right back to the YP ads.

For those of you having troubles with your websites, I would be willing to take a look and see if I can help you modify them in simple ways to get better action online.

Most of the time, business owners could make a few simple changes that could drastically change the amount of traffic coming to their sites.

Usually, I look at how the site is optimized for specific keywords. That means, if a keyword gets a lot of search volume in the search engines (example: "Toronto Plumbers" gets 2,400 searches in Google EVERY MONTH!!)... if a keyword gets enough search volume (anything over 100 is good), then I will sprinkle that keyword within the text on the homepage.

There, of course, are other simple, yet crucial, things to do but I would start with that - putting that main keyword onto the content of the homepage.

I hope this makes sense, if anyone needs clarification, I am happy to help explain it better so you are getting more business coming in.

For anyone looking for a very good website for very little money. Checkout www.footbridgemedia.com We use them and find them to be very good. Our yellow page ads still pull in the majority of our calls but our web based marketing works good and the cost per call from the internet is really low.

both is better

this subject has been talked about before...

I would die on the vine without the yellow pages ,
but the internet is catching up.....

I probably get 40% from the yelow pages and 30% from the internt,,, the rest are repeat customers and
homes branded with our stickers....

the more you can get free stuff from the internet
the better off you are

I have a listing on hotfrog... and Manta.. they are both free and get me on the first page of google....

free is good:yes:

Go with both, get a Facebook or start a plumbing blog page with some photos of your best work, put a paper ad up at the local grocery store, answer the telephone when it rings, be polite. Not always in that order.

A lot of internet listings are free.. google your company and see how easy/hard it is to find you and why. Compared to the phonebook, everything is now free.

(note "Master Mark", soon, Everyone will hate The Fed, not just us).
