It doesn't always fit. You plumb dishwashers into the disposal don't you. And you've never worked on the south side of Chicago. Grease grease and more grease.
Over here some of these yahoos plumb sink drains 20 1/2" and get an apron sink to boot.
Just can't fit 20lbs of isht in a 10lb box
I'll ptfe tape every tubular washer connection every time and it doesn't leak when backed up.
