I used to offer discounts like you discribed......... and found that the people that really needed them never asked and the people that didn't need help demanded them. Stopped advertising discounts and give them when I feel it's the right thing to do. Have done lots of freebe's over the years and found that it gives much more satisfaction when I choose who I should help ( not who thinks I should help them) The bad part about this is sometimes the people you help never call you back because they don't want anything for free. Unfortunatly thats one of the reasons I help them. It's a tough call good luck!

I do have a lot of senior citizens that turn down my discount. They feel that the young people with 3 or 4 kids deserve it more. The way i feel about it is those kids are a tax deduction that the seniors don't have. As far as the purple heart recipients just my way of saying thanks to my fellow vets that were in actual combat.

AL can't agree with you more! We need to take care of those that make that sacrifice so that we can continue to live the way we do! I have and will continue to help the wives and families of these people in any way I can! BTW I have no military background but appreiciate them greatly.

Have you ever done a job and put out more than what you said you would do at no charge and got hit with a discount out the window of a limited edition corvette. I guess what I am saying is discounts ( in my opinion)are for those that need them not those that want them.

yes I agree that how affluent people are depends on what kind of discount they get but when it comes to our wounded vets i don't care if they are the ceo of general motors I feel they deserve something special from me. My dad was wounded in France in ww II and walked with a limb the rest of his life because of it. He had a piece of schrapnel about the size of a siver dollar that was to close to his spinal cord they were afraid to operate. I myself am ex marine and I had a top sargeant that had so many pins and wires holding him together he sounded like the tin man from the wizard of oz when he walked. I was so proud to be an honorary pall bearer at his funeral. Don't know what the point is I am trying to make exactly. other than I feel they deserve it.

No senior citizen discounts.

That's age discrimination and you can get sued for doing so.

Besides,

Why entertain the hustle they are already playing with you.

When you get into that "I deserve this attitude" no matter what group of people you're trying to slap in print or on a truck,

remember that discounts should be offered, not given. Only on a case by case basis.

There are old people that will pay the bill the same if it had $10 knocked off.

If you got a fool that's pushing the issue...you need to overcharge, let them "think" they got a deal and never do work for those futkers again.

That is an awesome feeling when they're plumbing is in disaster mode, they "tried" to whittle you down last time and you tell them you got a sore thumb, can't work. Sorry, call that rooter franchise, they'll take care of your needs.

Company policy: Everyone pays the same.
The business overhead and expenses are the same no matter whom we are working for. At the end of the day I still have to pay the same company bills, wether I worked for a 35 year old billionaire or a 70 year old war veteran that day. I keep my pricing fair and that means everyone gets the same price. Any discounts that I may offer are on a case by case basis, at my discretion.

We do it on a case by case basis; however, I am really starting to rethink this.

My thought process, our prices are based on our cost and are very fair. For what we offer, I don't believe any plumbing company is cheaper. So in essence, everyone is getting a discount. Further thoughts:

1. Why should a Senior who lives in a million dollar house with a Bentley in the driveway receive charity from my family?
2. Why should the single mother who decides to support an alcoholic boyfriend be worthy of my charity?
3. Why should a Senior who spends all her social security money on bingo receive charity?
4. Why should someone in the military receive charity? Why not our civil servants - firemen, policemen (everyday heroes)? Why not volunteers who help the homeless and many other charitable cos.?

If our business cannot make payroll next week, do you think if I call any of these people they would donate to my very real need for charity? I think I know the answer to that one.

Being a small business, any money we give back in the way of discounts is charity. So I ask myself, if this person was on the street, in Walmart, wherever - and asked me for money, would I take $10, $20, $50 etc. out of my wallet to help them? Probably not. My family has bills and there is a limit to what we can do for charity, while still providing for those we are responsible for.

Why is it so many assume that if you are a business owner, you have access to so much more disposable income? In reality, most probably have less.

I'm starting to think business should be business and charity given directly from our income. Not the business.

All that said, we have offered discounts / did free work for:

Churches, Christian School, Disabled Veteran, a woman who just lost her husband, local police officer, the elderly, single mothers, college student, laid off worker, renter etc.

If someone gave me $10,000.00 today and said I can donate and distribute it anyway that I desire:

1. I have a charity in mind that I think would be very grateful for the gift.
2. I know I wouldn't be giving it to any of the recipients of our goodwill/charity listed above.

We can sympathize with those who are unfortunate and we can thank those who have served our country. I believe compassion, thanks, and respect in the long run will go further than the small discount.

My father says never do any work for free or a discount even if it s a family member. Then he explained that if my grandmother owned a bakery and gave free bread to family members and gave discounts to others she be out of business in no time.

On another note something PlumbCrazy said kind of rang in lines with what my father told people that complained about our rates compared to Joe Shmoe down the road. His response always is " Our rates are based on our costs to run our business, not what our competitors charge."
