I love being called a rip off!
Only to have the costumer call back asking when can I come out after they were quoted other rates.
My Basic sewer service in town starts at $150.00 fist 100 feet $100 per hr after that so if I'm there say 1hr and a half $200 bucks fair. The other companys start at 275-300 than 100 to 150 per hr.
People suck so I get a big kick out of being called a rip off and they all call back. I love the diffrent voice but caller ID don't lie.

They still think you are a rip off. They just think the other guy is MORE of a rip off.

I'm sorry sir/mam I can't work for someone who yells at me/calls me names on the phone. Thank you. Goodbye.

My cost of doing business and profit margin put me a lot higher than that. I guess it's because Connecticut is one of the highest taxed states in the union.

One thing I learned a long time ago from my father....be confident and command your wage. Dropping your price every time shows a lack of confidence in your abilities:)

Not only that, but if you are the low guy in town that means you are the industry whore and you are ruining it for your fellow plumbers. Bragging about being the lowest guy in town is a bit like bragging about how your wife has slept with every man in town.

call me what you will but business is growing

The town I service has a population of just under 10,000 I work for myself very low overhead the other companies are big name national companies who don't give if you can't pay your bills
With our unemployment rate of 9.1 % And people taking home less the 20k per year. High heating bills and the high cost of living, people getting laid off left and right. If I can charge a little less and help people keep food on their tables or an old couple stay warm and have a few people call me a rip off only to find out what the larger companies charge and call me back. If I can't compete with them ad size wise I can sure compete with them price wise If I was in like a Major City sure my rates would be the same 16 years in the business 3 years steady growth call me a whore all you want I'm doing something rite while big companies just raise rates. I'm trying to help people out during tuff times. Rip a costumer of once or have a costumer for life who's the whore.

I wish I could charge that much

I had my rates in place before these big name companies came to town.
I was here first now I kinda know how the little mom and pop shops feel when Walmart comes to town.

I have been reading posts on here old and new ,replying when I thought I could contribute and thinking I have never had a written complaint.Well today was my day Monday a friend of mine asked me if I could go to an older ladies home in my neighborhood and fix a commode. It was a old fluidmaster stuck not filling, so I replaced it,I guess it went so smooth she wanted me to repair her delta sink valve ,again smooth ,then look at a outside faucet that was not even leaking .I held my hand under the valve so she could see it was ok.(Bill time) I charged her 135.00 even for both the commode and delta rebuild, (springs cups, o rings ,everything eccept ball) hers was stainless steel. She paid, but let me know I was too high!Today I get a letter saying I was a robber without a gun and she would never call again. After all these years a letter, so I wrote her back in my own handwriting asking her to call companies in our area ,(smells )knows them JOHNS, WILBURS, ROTO,BEN FRANKLIN ,TRINITY,ETC and try to get a price, which I know they wont give over the phone,(and alot more in my letter not enough room on here for all of it ,but very polite) then I sent her copies of 2 pages from an old flate rate book I use, 2001<DWYER BOOK> commode 142.37. sink valve 129.09, odd prices huh? and I charged her 135.00 even for both (2 jobs according to the book) guess we cant please everyone all the time, maybe I better stay RETIRED !! am I gonna think about this tonight? nope its over now and out of my head, and no refunds !

That's why I hate people. Its either I'm called a rip off by locals or called a whore because I charge less then other companies. Can't win
Everyone around here is broke rare to get a homeowner with money.
The big name companies charge more than I do. Do I raise rates and lose clients to the big guys who people pay just for the name and their service techs are trained quick or under trained. I have probably same warrantee 6 months on a main residential 30 days commercial
30 days all drains 2 inch and smaller. Toilet 48 hrs
Wish I was in the Boston area again can charge up the wazoo there
But feel my prices are fair because people make way less up here

to unclog nh I used to be a whore too lol because I worked for so many different plumbers at same time I had 8 or 9 hats, shirts ,tickets, etc it was funny at inspections, the inspectors asked who was I whoreing for today, in those days alot of plumbers hated sewer cleaning and I acted like I worked for them .I never tried to steal their customers always told the ho to call so in so in so plumber for plumbing and me for the drains .That was the way they wanted it then.I was on jobs meeting inspectors when line was broken or needed repair, I sent that back to plumber that called me but was onhand at inspection with my camera and what ever else was needed to get it passed. back to good ole days , there was plenty of new work and remodeling in those days<> but never hate the customer they are ones that feed our kids and buy our boats and motorcycles alway do your best to please them ,but like in old song you cant please everyone so try to please yourself, when you look in mirror in morning say to yourself today is gonna be a good day and most likely it will be!!!

I remember an old lady like 8 years ago. I looked at a delta kitchen faucet and quoted i think was $125 for the repair and she said it was way too much. I politely asked her what she thought it was going to cost? and she replied $20. I explained to her it costs more than that just to get a plumber to press the door bell.

Think about that statement and it should prove to you that people very often do not purchase based on price. If they did, the arrival of the "big name companies" should have exploded your business upward within 6 months of their arrival. Why do they have any clients at all? You were there first and are cheaper than they are. Shouldn't you have them all? In a town of only 10,000 I should think the news would get around pretty fast. Sounds like you are working cheap and yet they are still eating into your market share. Why is that?

Speaking of hating costumers. I went to do an estimate at this smoking hot ladies house. She has d-cup bolt ons and was wearing something out of hors r us:thumbup: We are talking it up and I am trying to smooth my way in to getting the remodel and flirting and she's flirting back. I ask her if the pic on her fridge is her twin brother She says "No silly that is me before the boob job" Man do I hate costumers:laughing:
