Whats up guys! I am someone who knows nothing about plumbing. I just figured I could get some insight from professionals.

I rent my apartment and live on the second floor. My landlord lives below me and his son lives above. There is a fowl sewage like smell in the hallway. It comes and goes, but the intensity is getting worse. The smell is starting to travel into my apt. I have automatic air fresheners on both sides of my front door. Today I couldn't take it anymore and wrote a letter to him complaining.

I guess my question is does anyone have any ideas of what could be the problem. The plumbing set up is city sewage. My guess is that there is a leak in the pipe under the house directly under the stairs of the hallway. I know this question is basic, but I have no knowledge of the component setup of a city line. Thanks!!!!
