Has anyone had any experience or luck in joining a local chamber of commerce? Does it help or is it worth it for a new business? Or do they just take your money and not even offer you a reacharound? Looking for cost effective ways to drum up work and get my name out there, I’ve been beating down doors for a few weeks now and feel like I’m just spinning my tires.

Outskirts of a city, I could go 20 minutes one way and be in the middle of a good sized downtown, or 20 minutes another way and it’s nothing but corn fields and apple orchards.

I am in the country and we have never had enough guys, the past couple years with covid it's been even crazier. All those that can have been fleeing the disease infested cities.

As for the possible benefits of a COC, ask some other business owners who are already in.

I have reached out to a few small contractors in the local CoCs, a couple of painters, a builder, and a heating and cooling guy. Not sure if anyone will respond. I've mostly been targeting areas more out in the country, my city isn't really that bad compared to actual big cities but I'm getting sick of the traffic, the attitudes, the rats, the cockroaches, and the communists. Sorry for repeating myself with those last three. I've been hitting up real estate agencies, property management companies, and leaving my cards tacked to bulletin boards in small town hardware stores and other small businesses.

I get insurance discounts belonging to Chamber of Commerce so have been a member for many years.

I'm not a member of one yet but have thought about it too. I would tell you from my research that it largely depends on 2 things. 1 whether the place is run well where members actually show up and interact. 2 whether you have the right attitude and know how to network. Do not come in and just tell everyone I'm a plumber and here is my card. Ask about what the other members do and build an actual relationship with them and and ask what you might be able to do to help them.

In our area (Phoenix), small networking groups such as bni have been extremely successful for plumbers and other contractors. They meet weekly for breakfast to network and pass leads. The plumber in my group got many leads. There is usually 1 realtor, 1 GC/remodeler, 1 accountant, 1 lender, 1 of each specialty, 1 chiropractor, 1 moving company, etc. Are you commercial, residential, or both?

A former master was in a couple BNI groups. One is not the same as another. Good idea if it’s a good group. I hated having to attend the meetings, but I still use the graphics guy for my business cards and invoices. I’m still a old school paper kind of guy. It can be a good tool for some starting out or someone looking to expand and hire a crew, if they want that headache.

I’m doing residential and light commercial. I may have to look into a bni group.
