Angie's

Since I have opened my doors and started advertising I have been called by Angie's on 3 separate occasions. Every time they call we talk for a bit and I politely decline. But the last sales guy I talked to today almost convinced me to bite the bullet. I have yet to hear anything positive about them and their pay for lead approach, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask on here, has anyone had good success with Angie's? I haven't paid much for advertising, just some listings on Craigslist and today for the first time I boosted a Facebook ad. I'm still slow and I am filling my off time with other avenues of cash flow doing non plumbing related odd jobs for several people and door dash has been keeping my mortgage paid while slowly building a customer basis but I would love to put all that behind me and get busy doing what I love. Sorry for rambling haha. What advertising has worked for y'all? What hasn't? Currently trying to build a website too

As soon as you sign on with them, it will be all smoke and mirrors.
Then good luck trying to get out of it.

You can have an A rating and be lower than the Cs and Ds. Because they pay more. The whole thing is a scam. Had a customer just last week tell me about the painters she hired of AL and all the sh!t they stole from her house.

free pro tip, hit all the major directories, google, yahoo, bing, ect and make sure your Name, address, and phone number are EXACLTY the same on each directory. An example of this is “Stans Plumbing Inc.”
“Stan’s Plumbing Inc” they’re different and google will knock you down for it. Same with the street name. Don’t put “Rd.” On one and then “Road” on another when pertaining to your address. Same with area code. (850) or 850. Those little things will work wonders as far as the free stuff goes.

I just signed on with them for backup if I slow down really really bad.

That being said, I got buyers remorse right afterwards.

when working for past companies I had to run the angi leads after hours. I often had competitors calling. I’d call them back thinking it was a client, and I’d hear their voice mail saying “hey this is so-and-so with so-and-so plumbing”

the lead would not be refunded, and the lead was in excess of 100$

fkin yikes

Years ago I was told that successful companies expect that their advertising will be 8% of their sales.
So Angi wants to charge me 8% commission for a job, that would be fine if they didn't also sell the same job to nine others.
10 x .8 = $80 that they collect for a $100 job. So figuring that you're getting may one out of ten of those jobs, those commissions will come to $80 for every $f00 that you sell. Can you collect $100 from your customer and then pay Angi $80 of that off the top, keeping $20?
You're now paying 80% commissions when you compete with the other plumbers that are getting the leads.

The homeowners have no skin in the game, its a free quote to them. So being free, and no obligation to consummate the contract, they sign up, you and nine others get a lead, and Angi, gets 80% of the job.

I was with them for a short period of time, the leads they gave me were not good. I remember one that insisted that I would reuse the 20 year old flex connectors that would be coming off the old water heater and how long was my warranty for the installation. I told him to kick rocks.

I used to be on homestars (2007-20016ish) it was great for small-med sized business.. at $150/month for their premium package, I was on the first page(as long as you kept a good rating) for searches for plumbers in my city. I got prob 4-10 service calls a week.
Then homestars was bought out by Homeadvisor, all that work dried up, because I was at a lower lever, then now wanted $750/month + tax they got pissy and tried to pressure me when I refused and demanded I finish out the year (I think 4 months) paying the $150 even tho I was getting no calls, they said homestars doesn’t guarantee calls/work blah blah blah.. I still refused, after enough kicking and screaming they set me up with a pay/lead package, which was $10/lead and the promised that “only 2” other companies with get a shot at each lead. So I thought I give it a try, after about 10 “leads” either no one would answer the phone(prob fake leads), or they already got a plumber I gave up.

anybody using "porch" from lowes? they're pretty cheap leads around here. usually 13-25.00, the few that ive took testing the waters with weve gotten the job. Water heaters ill go after. bathtub replacements i wont waste my time with whatever garbage they purchased and threre is always sticker shock with that kind of work.

Angies list used to be great long ago... I had over 300 positive reviews on their site from 2001 through the bitter end
when they sold out to the dark side.... They are just another SERVICE MASTER now days and screw everyone over
selling the same lead to 10 different plumbers...
I had to call my credit card company and tell them I got my card stolen to get a new card so those
pricks would not keep charging my account for months after I canceled my service..

Then I’ll throw in my input.

Don’t pay anyone for referrals. Answer the phone every time it rings and go to work no matter what day or time it is.

Don’t buy anything you don’t absolutely need and save all the money you can.

Hire an accountant so your taxes get paid on time every time.

cuz it’s better to be to busy, then not busy enough!
You can never have enough work, and once you do then you start to pick and choose the work/clients you want to work for, and sub out the other work you don’t want, win win win.

I don’t advertise online anymore, I have a few small ads in local seniors areas, costs about $300/month.

I understand being busy and picking and choosing but paying for plumbing leads isn’t the answer in my opinion. It may work for some but IMO it won’t work for most.

So I’m a big NO and Never on Angie or any other leach.

My work history pretty much advertises for me. It’s have more work than I want to do but I’m a one plumber operation. That’s different than a large business. I make a higher profit to cost ratio.

It’s not how much you make, it’s how much you get to keep. Angie list just another leach……
