Funny I just had a frozen hosebib today too. I did not have one one in the van and we had been out of them at the shop for a while now so I went in to the 5' crawl space and shut off the valve for it and told the lady we would be back on Monday at normal rate and I would be nice and just bill her 1/2 hour for today's weekend rate.

Your customer won't be happy to pay the half hour and even more the weekend rate when service plumbers are supposed to carry some.

Personally if I didn't have a regular part in my truck there would be no charge. I wouldn't be surprised to receive an official complaint through proper channels and have to answer severely for it.

What's it like in your area, can people easily file a complaint and you have to explain your case?

No people can't that easily file a complaint. Sure they can complain to consumer affairs or what it's called if you genuinely rip them off like charging $200 for a $4 part or what ever. They can complain to the plumbing board if you do hack work or rip them off. In the end they don't have a leg to stand on if they simply don't like the price. If they look up a price of a part and find it for $5 and you charged $10 then that is simply normal business that material is marked up and they don't know exactly what you paid for it so only if it is total rip off price can they actually do something. If they complain about you only being there 1 hour and 15 minutes but charging 1.5 hour then you are still in the right because you can charge by the 0.5 hour and therefore is allowed to round up to the nearest full 0.5 hour. Complaints about paying for drive time is a waste because charging for 1 way drive time is industry standard.

Now complaints on workmanship is quite simple. Either it is up to code or it is not.

Actually I'm not technically a service plumber so my van is not fully set up as such. I do most types of plumbing. I am the one that does the most remodels in our company but I also do some service calls and a few new houses and have done a bit of light commercial too. When our service guy is out I mostly becomes the guy to do service that day. 3 of us rotate being on call.

Actually the customer was very happy because I told her that I would arrange only paying for 0.5 hour if weekend rate when we normally have a minimum of 1 hour but since it was an easy quick fix yesterday and she also has a different style of hosebib than we normally stock and we would have to go back. She will end up paying 1.75 hour at normal rate instead of 1.5 because the weekend rate is time and a half but this way we can also get her the same style of hosebib. I am also one of those in town that is best with good customer service and have many times received cards at the shop with customers telling the boss how happy they were with me and my work. I just this last week had a customer come drop off a box of chocolate and a nice card with high praise for me and my ability to help calm her nerves when she was out of state and her house froze. I even have an online review that mentions me by name and I kid you not they could not wait to write it because I got it before I was even out of their driveway.

For stocking parts well we simply can't have every part on the truck and we can sometimes run out of it and most people understand that. We do try our best to somewhat stock up but our boss wants to see us bill for a full 8 hours a day if we can but we do sometimes have to put 0.5-1 our on the timecard as shop time not because we were at the shop but because we could not charge for that time. With that we simply don't have much extra time to stock up and normally just grap extra stuff next time we are at the supply house
