Default Another free estimate.

I'll make this straight to the point. Woman wants a price and wasn't going to pay for me to go to check it out.

- Replace 60 gallon water heater(she says she's buying it)
- Fix the very old pump system with rusty tank that keeps tripping the breaker
- Single sink to double sink lav
- Move the toilet a few feet over in front of the window, seems like it's an extension to the house with a 4" step out back. This is based on the pics I got and she asked if I had to dig to move it over. The toilet and vanity are on an exterior wall.
- she wants a quote for 2 scenarios

When you read they want to supply stuff and you see it's already been diy'ed and a step out back, it probably a night mare when you remove the floor.

RUN!!

And the old guys thought plastic drain pipe and fittings would be the death of the industry and a boon to the diy. If only they had foreseen crimp connections and sharkbites

Ill be honest with you, the more hacks and DIY out there, they probably buy more plumbing stuff then plumbers do...so the companies are into selling , so making products very easy to use so joe home owner doesnt have to pay a plumber, the company can charge more for the parts because joe the home owner still thinks hes saving $$$$....
just look on the shelves of home depot and lowes..all the illegal non code junk they are selling billions worth to the happy home owner...they dont care about trying to sell to the licensed guy...

It doesn't bother me when I see homeowners doing DIY hack stuff. I consider it job security, and I sometimes tell them that, when they're apologizing to me for not doing it right. I try not to make them feel bad, and I've gotten repeat customers out of it when they learn their lesson and don't try to play plumber anymore. They're not going to call the guy back who makes fun of them. Especially when the wife is running her husband down for something he couldn't fix. I take his side and at least give him credit for trying. I tell them stories of customers who I try to save a little money by showing them how to do the simplest thing, who are too afraid to even try, and so they'll pay me to do it. Or, I'll tell them about something that I screwed up when I was nothing but a dumb DIY homeowner, but look what I can do now.

As I see it there is little to be gained by getting all butt hurt against the DIYers. Many of them are not going to stop no matter what we say. Some will see it as a challenge, and try again just to try to prove us wrong. I still get paid for doing the job, sometime more because of having to redo what they screwed up. I don't have any need to try to feel superior. They way I see it is if I partner with them, it's a win, win. Sometimes they are interested when I try to show them the way it should have been done, sometimes they are still embarrassed and stay away from me.
