I went wrong -the term side jobs. Pardon me.

I donít have any employees. I have a truck. But itís my truck. I also have a company truck from my employer; But it does not get it used for this type of stuff. They have GPS on it and would lose their minds.

I have an LLC which has duality under my wifeís business. The insurance and bonding is about $1500/ year because I have no employees and donít do much work. The state has an inactive process for the license, which is nice because you donít have to pay insurance or bonding during the times that the license is inactive.

All said and done, it averages about $2000/ year over the past 8 years. On paper, costs partially get absorbed by my wifeís business.

Iíve had it for a number of years because at one point I lost my job kind of suddenly. It wasnít My fault. The company I work for went under; and of course, that was at a time when I needed the money bad. I decided at that point that it was good to be employed but I was going to have a security blanket.

When I lost that job, I needed the money bad from that paycheck that got missed. I decided at that point that it was good to be employed but I was going to have a security blanket. Keeping the license is just that. A security blanket.

A lot of the work that I do is installing seismic motion sensitive valves. I doubt thereís much call for those anywhere else except up and down the West Coast. I turn a decent profit on them and the goal is to pay for all of my lic/ins/bond by March.

With all of this coronavirus crap flying around, Iím really glad Iíve continued to do this.

I like my job. But I also like a bit of independence and the knowledge that I could go out on my own pretty quickly if I needed to.

Now, Iíve had a lot of discussion with my old man about taking unemployment and things like that when needed. I just donít believe in that. I have never done it and never will.

Anyway, that was probably more than you all wanted to know.

works for me as I did the same thing in the beginning..any permitted jobs I had a licensed plumber cover me, but I was incorporated and had all the proper insurances...I built up my customer base and worked for someone the same time I was getting my licenses together....when the time was right I worked part time for someone and did my own work and got my master plumbing license..
I consider hack work or off the books as NON insured NON in business work..and if one is actively working for a company doing plumbing work, I dont see a big deal if they do work on their own ONLY if properly insured and have their own business...

The company I work for makes a big deal out of it yearly. I show them my license and insurance policies and bonds and all of that crap every year. HR gets involved and then my boss usually steps in. It’s all good. I just feel like it’s better if I’m upfront with everyone about what I’m doing from a business standpoint.

I also have to sign something that says that I won’t go after their clients. That’s fine. We don’t have projects that I could handle on my own anyway. That would not be my clientele as a start up.

Mr. Downhill, thank you for understanding. I was starting to think that people were getting pissed at me. Then I realized that the “side job” word is not the way I should be describing this.

You could rewrite the Iliad and if you made it plumbing related we would read it. The whole point of this discussion forum, is to discuss lolz. Write to your hearts content!

We really are one, big, happy, family here. We just don't like hacks so we ask a lot of probing questions. Also @Tango comes from the land of bureaucracy so don't mind him. He gets like 3 signatures just for the same job before he even touches anything.

The idea of not having to do any paperwork is so alien to some on here. Remember when people could shake hands over a deal and it would all go well? Still happens where I live but it is getting less common. The idea that you might cause an accident even with best intentions is so scary to most folks these days. Trust, no one has trust.

At our shop we mostly do business on a handshake except for a new house or remodel which gets a bid and a signature. Bid has no real legal wording on it and a very basic description of the work. Change orders is not a thing we just tell the customer that is will be extra and then do the work with no signature. I have probably asked for a check when done with the work maybe 10 times in 4 years. My boss is old-school. Around here you can generally trust people enough for a handshake.
