I don't remember what that repair kit is called but I tried using it one time and it did not work and the price for the repair kit was almost more than a new rough in valve. I would automatically just say replace now a days if something is that old because being that old the chance of a repair working good is way low.

We don't do tile work or anything else not plumbing. I have tiled 2 bathrooms myself floors and tub/shower walls. My first one was marble and my next was ceramic tile. I don't like it but I know how to do it. I have not yet seen a shower valve replacement needing any tile work. We replace from the back side and either they get a sheetrock repair or we put in a 14"X14" access panel

then you have been lucky to have access from the back all these times and the people want the same shower unit, what do you do if the people want to upgrade from a 2 or 3 handle shower body to a single handle???? gorilla tape?
