They shut them down in a sense that they are not making a profit.....the doors still may be open....letting money fly out the door before they close it.
If you call an employee biotching at the supply house counter sales about his job a trouble maker.......then fire every plumber and dont hire anymore because every plumber has done it.........its no worse than you complaining about your customers when they are the ones tht pay your bills

Even if you paid your employees $50 per hr and gave them a new van to drive every 6 months, new uniforms every week, new boots every week and so on, you would never make them happy.....this is called human nature. Can't control it, don't let it infect your way of thinking.

It is known and will always be a fact, you have more then one employee in a company, there are talking how they are treated amongst themselves, and rest assured it is not always good talk. Right now somewhere in this fine country 2 employees are talking about how there about too quit. Maybe they will land a new job before you even know it, and when that day comes you will ask yourself why.

I agree with you Ron and that's why we go out of our way to treat our employees with respect. A company operates somewhat like a family. Airing dirty laundry is not productive.

If there is a legitimate complaint, whining like girls at the supply house counter will not solve it. Man up and bring it to your employers attention. We are talking about adult men, aren't we? Whine up the ladder if you want any sort of change, whining to everyone else does nothing but hurt morale.

Let's turn the tables, as an employee would you be happy if your boss was whining at the supply house counter about you by name? Would you be happy if he was talking about you personally at the union hall? Would you be happy if he was complaining about you in front of other plumbing business owners?

Basically what you guys are defending is someone smearing your name without the opportunity to defend yourself. Let's call it what it is, idle chit chat. Women do it all the time . . . it's called GOSSIP!

I have complaints about our employees and these are discussed with my partner. If the complaints are valid and a behavior change is needed, we talk directly to the employee. I would never dream of downing them in front of suppliers, other business owners, or companies we work for.

Disloyalty serves no one!

We had this one employee, he moved away, gets mad because our boss the owner takes alot of vacations. For instance he is going to Argentina this week to go dove hunting. He does that a couple times of year plus whatever he does other times. Well anyway, last year things were very tight and the boss said no christmas bonuses. But this guy gets mad and *****es to everyone about it and it got back to the boss. So during a meeting with all the employees talking about whatever the boss turns to the guy and says "and Joey if you don't like how I run the business you're free to leave whenever you want". Then continues on whatever he was talking about. The guy looked like he was going to cry. It was priceless. PC brought up being like a big family, that's exactly how our place is. He will do anything for his employees. Except I get treated like the red headed step child and get all the **** jobs, JK.

EDIT: We did get our bonuses anyway

Those other shop owners who mistreat their employees will get theirs when the economy turns around. And we will be there to offer a safe haven for them.

Maybe they would be happy if you did their plumbing work free?

Everyone has a bad day. I don't think complaining at a supply house is all that big of a deal. They could make it much worse by saying something to a HO or commerical customer. Most people aren't happy 100% of the time. If they are having a bad day the least damaging thing they could do is vent at a wholesale house.

I would much rather have them complain than take 3x as long to complete a simple repair on a bid job or have their work performance suffer. A call back or damaging a customer's home in some way is much much worse. Unless the employee's overall performance has declined, I don't think it's that big of a deal.
