Default The role of your spouse

I've been walking my wife through some of the paperwork required in running my business and showing her how to keep the books, she has a fair amount of experience in record keeping and has picked it up pretty well. This is a good sign, I'd like to see someone I sincerely trust involved with my money (I trust my wife like nobody else) but I'd like to hear of other plumbers experiences of involing their spouses with their work?

This is basically an open thread about mixing your marriage with your work, any comments are appreciated.

My wife just pisses me off, and she is pretty good at it. If it was'nt for her I would work less and fish more. I'm not about to let her screw up my work life. Shhhh, here she comes.

Default There is a golden rule

And that is to not entwine your partner in life with your life's work.

Too often it leads to no down time between partners.

"How was your day honey?"

"Well, you know how it was; I was on the job and you was at home, taking calls." WTF???

I'll never marry/have a wife involved in my business affairs. I want her to have her own freedom and let her pursue her career in what her personal goals are about. Even if she wants to participate, I'll just tell her I got this far without someone.

Never have relations with your secretary. Get one that looks like Pat on SNL. That way you'll always be guessing what gender they are.

For some, it works....but I don't want to know the love of my life through the workplace. Statistics prove however that it usually ends marriages.

I am fortunate enough to have the most amazing wife in the World. She started out scheduling jobs and doing the books 30-years ago. As time went on she got more and more involved in running the business. There was a 10-year period where she did pretty much everything and I only was in the office when there was an employee giving her grief or for the larger projects.

After 20-years she decided to sell the shop and just be a Grandma while I did the consulting business. Then I took a bad ladder fall and she came out of retirement to push me around in a wheel chair. After I got out of the wheel chair she decided to stick around and do inspections with my consulting business. She handles a sewer camera and a locator like a pro but she had better not break a nail.

My wife and I have been married just North of 39-years and she is still my best friend and partner.

She is also not too proud to approach celebrities and ask for a quick photo. I don't have them on this computer but one day she got the complete cast of NCSI.

My wife works part time for the company. She works about 3 1/2 days for us doing payroll and keeping the books managed. She spends the rest of the time managing kids, and volunteering at our local church.

When I first met my wife, she had a good job, and I was just getting by.

We were dating, and I was footing the bill for movies, dinner, etc. So she comes to me one day and asks to borrow like $250. (two fiddy), for her car payment

So I give it to her, then I get to thinking, WTF is she doing with all her coin? I approach her, and she says I don't know, my checkbook register says I only got like $180 (buck eighty). I ask her the last time she balanced it?

Needless to say, I looked it over, she had like $8000 (eight large).

18 years later....................................

I'll take care of the books, thanks

Talking Keep them apart.....

I would be nothing today but a piece of old dried up dog **** if it were not for my wife....
.she is smarter than me and wiser too....

but I would not have her have anything to do with the business...

My parents did that route when I was a child and it
was not a good thing.... she became his secretary and
house keeper while he plumbed every day....
and when it was time to retire, he did not want to..
and the story goes downhill from there...

I would rather just keep things separate than having
the whole family unit revolveing around the plumbing business..

cause some day you must lay down your spurs..
or they might end up stuck in your own hide......

It's real simple. I just tell my wife.....

1. Do as your told and like it

2. Do not speak unless spoken too

3. I am always right, even when wrong.....

4. Dinner better be ready when I get home

5. The house better be clean.....always (we have 2 kids & 5 pets)

6. I am so full of $hit........

She has her own job and pretty much stays out of my business, except for tax time when I need help getting my shoebox full of paperwork together.

I am lucky to have her..... She would say the same about me
