Do like I used to do when I was a kid. Wanna know how something works? Take the crap apart. Sorry dad, I know you still mad about that smokless ashtray thing.

Default is this a joke

not trying to be mean, just wondering. ask they guy you're working for. if you are not working for anyone, maybe starting off on your own is a bad idea. you could just take apart anything you want to see how it works.

OH! Sorry, lad. (er, or lass).
That qualifies your question and it's cool that you'd jump in to a forum filled mostly with experienced craftspeople that would know this kind of stuff in their sleep.

Follow protech's post (ie: use google and whatnot) to get you started. There's tons of stuff about simple compression shutoffs, washerless valves, Delta's "Diamond Seal Technology"©, etc.

We're not really rude, we're just mean. Well, rude too, but that goes with being mean.

Good luck on your endeavours and if you choose plumbing as a career choice then good on you.

cheers
