I went with an ARE aluminum cap that was 6' tall so I was able to stand in the back. But that looks like a decent capper. oh and your link does not work, I had to remove the .For from it.

Here's what I think...and what I found doing a similar 'search'...

For around the price of one of those fancy caps purchased new I could (and did) purchase a used van that was already outfitted with a full setup of shelves (including bulkhead) and three roof racks. Not the prettiest girl at the dance, but the air works and I"ve got less than $2700 invested in her including new radiator, tuneup and brake work.

Now, I know that you'll get a whole slew of other opinions-but this is mine:

A van beats a pickup with a cap everytime, and you'd be a fool to buy anything new in this economy (or any other economy for that matter), there's just too many great deals out there on used vehicles to piss money away on that new car smell.

Also, I found an A.R.E. cap with utility boxes for $400 on craigslist. I put it on my F150 and have that as a backup if my van needs service. Total investment for both vehicles?

Less than $6000...zero down...zero payments. I did the math, and for about the price of one year of 'new' car payments I have two trucks setup for service.

If you know what you are doing and have a good mechanic you can do that all day long...

Again-that's just my two bones...

What i was plaining to do is to convert my pickup truck into a service truck for a year or two and to use it as a back up truck so when or if i purchase a new one i would have some thing to fall back on if service is needed......i already have a 97 3500 chevy van with 270,000 plus miles on it that the motor is going south on it and need major work to the suspension and tranny

If I was to get a new truck today it would be a duel cab full size 1 ton pick up. Then I would get a tall enclosed utility body installed.

As I said I had a full size 1/2 ton pick up with a 6' tall ARE topper, and it held more equipment and tools than my full size van did, and it did it in an organized manner. I did not learn this till I traded in my pick up for the van. Before my pick up, I was in a 1985 cutaway van with a fully enclosed utility body which was only getting 7 MPG. So in short I really like my pick up truck , and I believe it can be a great work truck if done right.

Neat idea and concept, but I would want to know how the composite material holds up in -20 -30 degree weather. I would imagine there would have to be a certain amount of flex i.e. stress cracks etc.
