Every winter, we deal we a few sump pump discharges that exit the structure underground. We'll catch a warm coupled with heavy rains and the discharge will be froze.
How do you all deal with it? Do you jet it open and leave it to freeze again? Try to reroute to the surface? |

I reroute them to the service and make a rig so they can convert it back to underground when spring hits. I have this nice elderly lady I go to her house in the fall disconnect it from the underground and hook up the extension pipe to get the discharge away from the house, and in the spring I go back and hook it back up for here. We only charge her a service call each time.

I use an 1 1/2" tee on the exterior of the house, branch facing down. An 1 1/2" trap adapter w/plug on the end, if it freezes (it will) a 10' piece of 1 1/2" with a male adapt. gets threaded into the trap adapt. works good.

IMHO when a sump pump discharge freezes, the pump can't do its job and the resultant problem if gone unnoticed can cause a lot of damage. Usually when installing this type of system we will install a tee in the underground line close to the discharge from the house and run that pipe up about 4' and put a 180 downturn on in. If the line freezes the pump will at least continue to pump and the dishcharge will be noticed. Under normal conditions there will be no discharge from the downturn.
