I have came across one on an A/O smith W/H. Could someone explain to me what the device is off to the side? I know it connects to the control valve then the tube sits inside next to the burner, but the wires run into the furance?
It was sold packaged with tank water heaters for awhile (mostly AO Smith) and also sold as an accessory. Later replaced with a tank mount venter mostly to compete with Bradford White that had the 6' rubber hose, and AO Smith introduced the first PVC venting on a standard HWT. It was the high amount of dilution air that kept the pipe from melting,
It is a add-on Tjernland power venter. The pressure switch sensed gas flow and would start the fan, once fan was proven, it would open the gas solenoid allowing gas burner to ignite. It included draft hood spill switches and an extra tube to burner area to vent pressure switch.
The fan inlet was adjustable to control draft over fire but seldom understood or adjusted. It was incredibly inefficient since it would draw excessive air besides expelling tremendous conditioned ambient air.
The other popular unit was and still is the field unit where the motor is outside in a hood and much quieter.
I've installed many power vent systems similar to these back in the day. There were a few available back then that were an add on for standard vent water heaters. Tjernlund is a brand I seem to recall.
