Post Non Licensed Companies

How can we stop losing work to non licensed plumbing companies. The customers need to know what can happen if they hire one of these "job stealers". Any Ideas?

Every time this happens do at least 4 positive acts to enhance the publics' (or your client's) perception of plumbers to make those people seem like insignificant beggars. Give the HO more reason to want to use a licensed plumber. Make them want to do business with a legit company. If you only focus on the negative and tell people why they shouldn't as opposed to SHOWING them why they SHOULD use a licensed plumber you only make yourself look bad. By proxy you are comparing yourself to those people when you do that. By simply acknowledging them to an HO you are in a sense validating their existence. Focus on what you do better, not what they do worse. If you are an established company with proven first rate service the difference should speak for itself. And if you are fortunate enough to be meeting your revenue goals and don't have to spend every ounce of energy on getting by for the moment, commit a measured amount of resource to proactive enforcement. If you cant spare a commitment to enforcement its not a bad thing. Focus on something good like finding and converting more clients. One ounce of energy wasted on those fools if you cant afford it is one ounce you could be spending on making money.

Burn their houses pickup trucks and vans to the ground because in this economy the plumbers boards are too chicken **** to do anything about it. How about this quote from the chief inspector at mine " We can't do anything about unlicensed plumbing because they don't have a license and we don't have jurisdiction over anyone except licensed plumbers" ???????????? WTF ?

I dont advocate arson but I get your point loud and clear. The same was told to me by the local inspector. They will issue a stop work order and thats IT....if the work continues after that then the unlicensed guy will be arrested and then fined. Its a joke....The code department is not focused on unlicened handymen...they are focused on catching a plumber without a permit or nit picking a job to death so they can come back and get the resinspect fee. Its all about money baby

I will say this for the State of Texas. if I file a complaint, It would be acted on immediately, They levy $4000.00 fines regularly.

Default what a joke!

I love the fact that how the system works. WHAT A JOKE! here. I see 100's of truck with out being lettered or even have a license # on it. I just call the board and give them the phone # off the truck or if I see the truck parked at the same place over and over (most likely where they live) I give them that address. I worked to hard and followed all the rules to get where I am.

Instead of bit@hing and complaining to everyone, but the people that can do something. We need to make the politicians work for us, and enforce the laws on the books.
I want to start some kind of campain here in Indiana to get every licensed plumber to inundated the State Representatives with complaints until they do something. That will be the only way to make something happens as it pertains to the legal aspect. Indiana has not enforcement, and it pisses me off. The State could make a bundle if they handed out fines to non-plumbers doing plumbing. The word would get out, and people would be more scared to do the work.

I agree with the post about educating customers. I bring it up as often as possible. I even injected it into a presentation I was doing for a business class I was taking.

Funny thing, the other day I called the city and asked them what they need to pull a permit under my license, they said just someone with approval written on company letterhead....

I said, well do you call the referance, person who wrote the approval, she said no, then I asked if I can give my company name and see what permits were pulled under my license in that city.....she said no, that she couldn't, but maybe someone else could, she didn't know....

LOL, these people at these city desks are lazy and locked into gov jobs.

No one cares, there is no protection.

You live in a state that allows non plumbers to legally install plumbing systems, deal with it.
