Default Too nice is bad too

I know we have all dealt with the arrogant know it all customers that are just plain jerks but have you ever had one that was way too nice. I got this job last night from a friend of mine. His 3/4 inch poly water service was leaking and he ask me to come fix it for him. Well I got there and he was still at work but his wife was there who is also a very good friend. As soon as I got there she showed me where the leak was so I got my bibbs on and started digging in the very heavy wet mud. I turn around and she is standing there with a shovel in her hand and flip flops on her feet. Well it didn't last very long and she quit digging but the whole time I was there she would ask me every couple minutes, do you want a drink or would you like something to eat heres a towel wipe your hands I mean this went on and on for 3 hours it drove me nuts. She is a good friend of mine but it nearly ended last night. I was just about ready to take the damn towel and throw it into the ring and go home. I know she was trying to be nice and she felt sorry for me cause I was covered in mud from head to foot and I tried to tell her this is what I do I am use to it. but she just kept on bugging me. Has this ever hapened to any of you and How did you deal with it. I didn't want to hurt her feelings and tell her to leave me alone as i am going to replace thier sewer line and water line in a couple weeks. She said she was going to take the day off to help with the installation and I quickly told her that she did not have to do that,

Maybe she was really bored. Do they have many Visitors?
I get elderly people like this and I know it's because they have noone to talk to.

send them on very long impossible missions. "yes, you can help. I think I'm going to need a 6"copper by pvc flange kit with teflon gaskets. I'll keep digging and get everything ready and by the time you get back I should be ready." Send them to the supply house on the other side of town. If you're really slick you can even call the the counter guy at that branch and get him to play along.

Trust me this lady is not bored or lonely. Her and her husband are 2 of the greatest people I have ever met in my life. They are the ones that got me back in church in which they are very very active. I love them both to death and we socialize with them a great deal. It is just aggravating when you are working knee deep in mud that keeps sticking to your shovel and your are sweating trying to hurry up and its starting to get dark and this lady is out there bugging you every 2 minutes for a drink or a sandwich and telling you to take a break or having a conversation. but it is all good now I got a temporary fix on the water line till I can get over there to replace there sewer. You won't believe what this jack leg plumber did to there sewer but I will post that in another post after I get done here.

Is she offering to help because she thinks it will save her some money? - If so, politely say "This job is going to cost $XX, if you continue to help me, it will be $***X. I work faster by myself."

Is she really just trying to be nice? - Then politely say "I really appreciate you are trying to help me, but I do jobs like this all the time and prefer working alone without interruption. It keeps me on task and I don't like to be distracted because that's when mistakes happen. I'd love a glass of water and if there is anything I need that you can help with, I promise to let you know. I wish all my customers were as nice as you."

Money is not the object. I am practically doing the job for nothing not because I feel obligated to but because I want too. Like I said they are very good friends of mine. They have helped us move twice She coordinated our wedding, and He was my best man. They have both been there for us whenever we needed them without us even asking for thier help and never ask for anything in return. And she is not trying to be nice she is nice thats the problem she is too nice hence the title of this post. I will take your advice though on telling her to leave me a lone while I am working, politely of course. I just don't want to do anything that will upset her, or him for that matter. Good people like that are hard to find these days. I know that she is just doing it cause feels sorry for me being hot sweaty, digging in the mud pissed off because of how that jackleg mickey mouse so called plumber really took advantage of them but it is just more aggravating when she is hounding me constantly. I almost dread going over there in a couple weeks to redo all that jerk did but I will and I will endure it. Hell I made it through parris Island with a smile guess I can make it through this.

Put your self in her shoes, a really good friend coming over to fix my plumbing problem, hospitality is the best you can offer...Bite your tongue and say thank you but I can work and accomplish this faster on my own...
