Default How do I find my WEP?

Computers are not my best friend! Trying to help my son connect to X-Box live and it is asking for:

1. Write down your wireless network name (SSID), channel, and the security key (WEP key or WPA passphrase) for your wireless network.

Where do I find this? My Router is a D-Link DI-524. My daughter's old boyfriend connected it and I know nothing about it.

Your default WEP key is a 10-digit number below a barcode under your 2Wire mode. The other number there is not 10 digits, so it's easy to tell which one it is.

If you changed the default key to something else then try going to http://192.168.1.254 . This is your gateway's admin page where you can retrieve the WEP key.

And please, don't reset your modem. That would be unnecessary extra work.

If you detect more than one wireless network like the ones on your pictures, that means one of your neighbors also have a 2Wire. The default SSID is 2WIRExxx where xxx are the last 3 digits of your gateway's serial number (also under the gatway itself).

To find your WEP key go to a computer WIRED to the gateway, go to the 'command prompt' under 'Accessories' and type IPCONFIG. This command will give you the 'default gateway' address, which should be something like 192.168.1.254 (see link above).

Now, type that IP on your browser and browse to the wireless settings page. You may need a password to access these pages. If you don't have it you will need to call your ISP or reset the gateway and use the default WEP key on the sticker under the gateway.

D-Link access page is at http://192.168.0.1

You will need to know the password to get in...if it wasn't changed the username will be ADMIN and the password shall be left blank. Once you are in you need to fish around under wireless settings. That is where the WEP security should be. It can be one of two things...a random hexidigit number or some word that the boyfriend choose. Linksys routers, you were able to actually see the digits, I have a new D-Link 655 and it was a total pain in the ass to get setup. I have a Play Station 3 3 wireless computers and two wired computers. I don't want to get into the hell Dlink put me through but after hours of working on it, I figured it out. For you it might be easier to just do a madter reset and start over. The SSID is the name of your network...it comes with a default but you can very simply change it. normal security allows people close to you to see it...Of course we are speaking soley about wireless. So I named my network "Howdy Neighbors" becasue I know they can see it!

I created my own personal security code...so I wouldn't have to deal with what you are. With the Linksys it didn't matter because it was very easy to actually see that code and just enter it in in whatever you are connecting...I also have my printer / copier / fax on the woreless network too....I had to enter the code I made in each device. If you don't have the manual go download it. My advise is to just wipe it clean and redo it to your likings. You will get a million different ways to do it online....some will work some won't...just depends on how much patience you have for this. A computer tech should easily be able to do this in less than an hour..

Hope this helps

Edit: The WPA/WPA2 is just a longer more complicated form of encription and as I found out not all devices will agree with that. There isn't a huge amount of security in WEP but it's better than nothing AND if they really want in to your network they can get past just about anything...but someone really must have it in for ya if that happends.

Security is all about making it so much of a hassle to get in that it's not worth it...

Needless to say if I'm driving down the road with my laptop looking for some bandwidth to borrow and your system is WEP encripted I'll keep going to the 2nd or 3rd house down from you where its wide open for the plunder...

Exactly!
My next door neighbor is a programmer and an IT admin for HP. I asked him about all this just a few weeks ago...basically with the WPA...err WPK...damn I forget the exact acro...longer the encryption the longer it takes a hacker listening to decode. He told me with the higher encryption it could take as long as 2 days of a hacker monitoring your broadcast to get in...with standard WEP it's like 4-6 hrs

Thanks for the info. It's not beneath the barcode and I do not have the password, so going to the site yielded nothing. Apparently the boyfriend did not leave the default settings. Their break up was messy, so I may try to contact D-link. Told ds he will have to wait!

? - My daughter can get on with her laptop when she visits. Does this mean her laptop has my WEP info. somewhere?

Well....it's possible. If the old BF is an idiot he left it unsecure, requiring NO security code...that means anyone can log on. Starbucks doesn't even let people do that anymore.

Your going to have to reset it. Look for a tiny tiny button...or a hole somewhere on the router. Usually push and hold for a few seconds. BUT you will still need to get into the system. It's not just some simple plug it in and bam it's working.

http://192.168.0.1

After you see the splash screen just click submit...it will attempt to get you to make a code (just to get into the settings)...this is optional.

Every wireless network has a name. Your will be something along the lines of dlink-(XYZ). Chang it so you can tell yours from your neighbors. If your daughter can get on your network than that means you have no security, if she gets on to a neighbors than they have no security. BUT you would (in my mind) want to have a secure network that other people can't easily hack into. AND when your kid is their she ought to be on a secure network...instead of a neighbor that could easily be reading everything being sent or recieved. There is a way to see if your existing network is secured or not using the Xbox but it would take me all day to explain it. Just enter that 192 number and once your in, look up status and start reading everything you see.

Give this a read too: http://www.howtodothings.com/computers-internet/how-to-secure-a-d-link-di-524-router
